more speculation on why the itunes phone is delayed

interesting insight as to why mobile operators fear the itunes phones:

"Analysts speculated that mobile operators spoiled the party by threatening to block the music buying service for fear of losing lucrative ringtone business.

Apple charges less for a full version of a song than consumers are used to paying for a few seconds of ringtone."

why are there no viruses for the mac?

some say that the mac isnt exposed to viruses, spyware, trojans, etc because of its lack of critical mass and a huge non-secured user base. this article from the register suggests that the reasoning goes deeper: because the mac is so delightful to use, who would want to screw it up.

i personally believe that there are no viruses because of the security of the OS combined with the small user base, but hey, im open to anything.

google to go with CPM model

google has decided to accept banner ads on sites within its network, but not google itself. google.com will still only offer text links to its advertisers. in addition, google is going to shift to a cost per thousand model (CPM) in order to compete on the same playing field as traditional media and go for television's jugular.

pornstation portable - it didnt take long...

playboy.com is making free content available to psp owners. owners of today's hottest multimedia device can download a zip file of scantilly clad owmen for free along with a video clip featuring "cyber girl." if you want to see naked women, you can spend $19.99 on a cyberclub membership.

how could this happen you ask? well, when sony opened the door to open standards, they left the door wide open for anyone to provide content for teir system. you wont be able to make games, but you can offer anythign you want in video, photo, and sound formats.

the multimedia features of the psp, combined with the developing pod cast trend is going to create a packet based culture that marketers will be sure to jump on.

gaming hardware becomes subsidized by advertising

according to ign, gizmondo, the handheld that you never hear about, it about to relaunch with a new model. the new model will carry a price of £129, which is approximately a £100 savings off the previous model.

you still get the same full featured gaming device, however, ads will be streamed to your device based on your customer profile.

yes, this is advergaming to the next level, however, is it really any different then what the folks at massive are doing as they lock up publishing partners to stream ads into games purchased by gamers (although, their customer data is currently anonymous).

Cingular convinces bands to release songs as ringtones before singles

engadget has a crazy story about how cingular has cut deals with artists such as coldplay to release their next single, as a ringtone, 6 days prior to their radio release.

im skeptical on this one, as im not sure how successful this will be, as people want the ringtones after the song is a hit. ringtones are all about expression, etc.

whatever, cingular's got cash..

removing the middle man from the record business

here is a really interesting editorial piece from the register. which tells the story of a third fiona apple album that has never been released.

according to the story, sony has held off on pressing the cd because they didnt feel that the record contained a pop hit in the spirit of nora jones, and would be popular enough to move her back catalog. so, sony has chosed to shelve the record until sometime in the future.

the record was recorded in 2003 and has eventually found itself being distributed online through bittorrent, which has enabled over 18,500 downloads. while 18,500 downloads isnt exactly a lot, it still is quite interesting considering that there has been no promotions and no production costs - simply her fans downloading her latest release.

so, the question is, why don't record companies enable the web for providing records in download only mode? this example proves that record companies can take chances with minimal production costs on records that they are hesitant on releasing. if the record turns out to be successful, they can simply turn on the presses.

just food for thought. check out the link.

the japanese psp region gets the first content download, as wipeout pure can download a .wad file that includes a new track. vehicle, and menu skin.

still no word yet on when we can expect this content offering in the north american region. this is surprising considering that the game first launched in north america.

judge this phone for yourself. it looks like a fake to me, but since this is motorola making the design decisions, it could easily be the real thing.

how much does a blackberry hurt?

the reg is reporting that naomi campbell assaulted her assistant with her balckberry. while this obviously isnt necessarily a great thing, it does bring to mind the question of "if you are going to beat someone up with a pda, which one is the best to use?"

man stabbed for theft of virtual weapon

a shanghai man was stabbed by his online gaming partner after the man sold a virtual weapon that was loaned to him by the assailant.

the players had been playing "legend of mir" and the police are still trying to figure this one out.

this is all very interesting and a precursor as to what is to come when massive multiplayer online games become more mainstream on online consoles.
